Rosa María Medina, the mayor of local development, stated: «The objective is to ensure an environmentally respectful intervention that returns the bridge to its original state, without modifying its design or use, respecting its historical and current functionality.»
On July 15, 2025, repair works began on the stone perimeter of the well-known «Barrio Puente» on Puente Alberca street, at the corner with Santa Clara Avenue. This action followed a traffic accident that occurred in June, where a vehicle collided with this heritage structure, causing several ashlari to fall at ground level.
Rosa María Medina explained that «the damages affect a protected area of the urban space in Lorca, especially in the stone bridge over the Guadalentín River, which is part of the city’s historical heritage. Our goal is to address the basic limestone and five of the railings, one of them broken, descending to ground level, formed by the lower level. SLIGHT MOVEMENT OF SOME ADJACENT ASHLARI.
Furthermore, the local development councilor detailed that «it is a sensitive action that will involve an investment of over 10,000 euros and will be carried out by specialized personnel to ensure the correct replacement of the specific and traditional ashlar.»
This area and its surroundings date back to the 19th century and are included in the catalog of protected assets as «municipal property,» considering a type of protection existing in the overall plan 87 of the third degree, allowing for its conservation, consolidation, and restoration. The action falls within the permitted interventions in assets listed with structural protection, in accordance with article 154.2 of the regulations of the General Urban Planning Plan, and is expected to be completed within two weeks.
Medina Mínguez recalled that, through the municipal legal services, the «maximum criminal penalty» will be sought for the person responsible for the serious events of the accident, as well as the full repair of the damages caused to the municipal heritage. «The necessary actions will be requested for the application of current regulations in the field of foreigners, including, if applicable, the request for expulsion to the national territory, in accordance with the applicable legislation,» she said. The expulsion order entails a return to the country of origin and a ban on returning to the Spanish territory.
