The spokesperson for the Popular Party in the region of Mercia, Miriam Guardiola, assessed the balance of the first quarter of 2025 from Pedro Sánchez’s government, describing it as «a critical and very negative period for the region» and highlighting the main consequences of this «inefficient government policy that seriously affects the citizens.»
Firstly, she emphasized that the region continues to be «one of the most affected by the regional financing system, which has plunged the community into a growing deficit,» as reported by PP sources in a statement.
«This unfair and discriminatory system has reduced the resources we receive, making it difficult to provide quality public services to our citizens,» stated Guardiola, indicating that a reform of the financing system to ensure equal treatment for the region of Murcia is urgent.»
Guardiola pointed out that «we are the community that receives the least money to deal with the same public services as in the rest of the autonomous communities, especially with 600 euros less for each citizen in the region of Murcia and almost 1,000 less than the best-funded community. She also emphasized the government’s impact on the agricultural and animal sectors.
The policies implemented by the Socialist Executive have led to a «direct punishment in the field, with restrictions and regulations that hinder competitiveness and the future of the sector. The lack of institutional support and irregular decisions regarding agricultural policies endanger the livelihoods of thousands of families in Murcia,» according to Guardiola.
Adding to this is the «Tajo-Segura crisis.» The water policy of the Spanish government has been a «disaster» for the region, and the threat of transfer cuts remains a constant concern, added the «popular» spokesperson.
«This measure jeopardizes vital water resources for agriculture and compromises the economic development and quality of our lives. The region cannot afford more cuts, and we demand that water be guaranteed for our fields and homes,» she said.
Regarding hydraulic infrastructure, the Sánchez government has shown an «absolute lack of commitment» to ensuring water supply to the region and the safety of citizens before torrential rains.
Key projects, such as the construction of dams in LeBor, Nogalte, Bejar, and Torrecilla in Guadalentín; Tabala and the northern collector in Murcia; or the Camarilla tank, «continue to be ignored, further exacerbating our water situation,» she said.
Debt restructuring, tax increases, and lack of budgets
The PPRM spokesperson also lamented the «inequality» situation generated by the central government with the «debt announcement towards Catalonia,» which «had no positive effect for the region of Murcia and continues to attract increasing public debt.»
Additionally, she highlighted «the 96 tax increases generated by the Socialist government, penalizing families, small and medium-sized enterprises, and productive sectors. This suffocating fiscal policy further deteriorates the regional economy and the ability to create jobs,» she added.
On the other hand, she recalled that «the country continues to deviate with a government that has been anchored to present a budget project throughout the Legislature, systematically violating Article 134 of the Constitution, which establishes the Government’s obligation to present the general state budgets at least three months before the expiration of the previous year.»
Finally, she called for urgent change. «Another way of doing politics is possible, and the Popular Party can demonstrate that when Feijóo reaches Moncloa,» she said.
From the PPRM, «we demand a fairer policy that respects our interests and ensures the future of our community. The region cannot continue to be the great forgotten by Sánchez’s policies. A change is certainly needed in regional financing, in the treatment of the agricultural sector, in water management, and in fiscal policies affecting our land,» she concluded.
