The Lorca government will improve the offering to Lorquinos and visitors through a new electric public transportation system, fully funded by the European Union under the recovery, transformation, and resilience plan, using the following funds
The initiative is part of the «Tourism Sustainability Plan in the Destination», which compiles various actions based on green and sustainable transitions, energy efficiency improvements, digitization, and tourism competitiveness.

Lorca, February 28, 2025. Lorca is moving towards a more sustainable and appealing tourism sector. This was conveyed by the tourism advisor of the city of Lorca, Santiago Parra, who announced the acquisition and soon-to-be operational new sustainable and decarbonized vehicle, with an investment exceeding 400,000 euros, aimed at facilitating city tours.
«On board this unique transportation, interested parties can travel to different monuments with the option of a guided tour uncovering facades, noble houses, churches… but now in a more environmentally friendly manner. This new tourist train will be available to all users, accessible for groups with prior reservations, individuals, depending on the season and activities, and also for private events with advance bookings, allowing citizens to enjoy it at social gatherings, even for private parties, for instance; By phasing out some of the diesel vehicles in operation since 2002, with all the implications that entails,” stated the mayor.
«Furthermore,» it is added, the possibility of integrating as a sustainable public transportation system in the municipality is being studied to enhance connectivity between the historic center and various tourist attractions within the municipality. This will employ sustainable electric transportation, improving mobility and tourism, residents’ quality of life and mobility, as well as reducing traffic congestion, noise, and air pollution.»
Through initiatives like these, which also include projects such as the castle slopes’ remedy and efficient lighting or enhancing the city’s streets, «Lorca positions itself as a benchmark in sustainable tourism, promoting the local economy and enhancing citizens’ lives, as we together build a more attractive and future-ready Lorca, a municipal transformation that is already underway.»
At present, the mayor recalled that Lorca is a beneficiary of the «Tourism Sustainability Plan» within the recovery, transformation, and resilience program through the autonomous community’s territorial plan in the Murcia region, to enhance the municipality’s tourism offering, making it more accessible, innovative, and respectful.
This plan encompasses various actions addressing sustainability issues, digitization, and adapting spaces for tourism use, associated with different environmental labels. These actions are included in several key areas:
– Green and sustainable transition.
– PET Energy efficiency
– Digitization
– Tourism Competitiveness.
Specifically, this new initiative is part of the recovery, transformation, and resilience framework under the European Union-Next generation, within the Spanish state’s recovery, transformation, and resilience plan, for Action No. 14 (Axis 2: Energy efficiency enhancement) named «Implementation of sustainable public transportation for sustainable public service that travels and enhances connectivity of urban and tourist routes with electric vehicle”. Specifically, the subsidized amount totals 405,350 euros.
