Lorca, May 15, 2025. Lorca is abuzz with the scientific edition of the «Pain of Science» festival, an international design initiative following on from the success of the four previous editions held in our city. The goal is to bring science and citizenship together through the transfer of knowledge from laboratories.
It will run for three days, May 19, 20, and 21 at Silos Chamber, starting at 7:00 p.m. Participants can enjoy six informative discussions, monologues, or experiments lasting between 20 and 30 minutes, led by researchers from various fields who will share their work in a unique nighttime setting. The discussions will cover topics ranging from the depths of the earth to space through the lens of humanity.
It was announced by the culture councilor of Lorca, Santiago Parra, along with the initiative coordinator in the municipality, Sergio Hernández, and the head of communication and press, Ana Barrance, that these meetings aim to provide access to scientific knowledge and bridge the gap between citizens and visitors.
«Throughout its journey in the municipality, the festival has attracted people of all ages and levels of science experience. This year, with the support of the Municipal Council and particularly the Department of Culture, we wanted to collaborate again, given the positive reception of previous editions,» stated the mayor of culture.
Specifically, the program in Lorca covers a wide range of topics. The festival kicks off on Monday, May 19, with «Looking at the sky», featuring Ana Belén Ruiz Jesz and Laura Palacios Peña, who will unveil the new European GPS system: «Galileo and the most pressing weather predictions».
«On Tuesday, we will focus on the sea as a source of untapped resources, explained by Juan Tomás García Bermej, and to appreciate the species, we will have Angélica Bass Gómez,» the mayor added.
It’s worth noting that «Pain of Science» has been organized in Spain through nine editions, totaling 1,800 events in 750 venues with over 4,300 researchers and 110,000 attendees. The tenth edition in our country is the largest and most localized,» said the mayor of culture, highlighting that in 2025, it will be celebrated simultaneously across the continent with 27 participating locations.
The Spanish Pint of Science Association is the driving force behind the initiative in our country, with the support of over 600 volunteers, including five in Lorca, and numerous sponsored partnerships that make each edition possible.
