Reconocimiento a dos lorquinos ilustres en Purple Step por el Consejo Municipal de Lorca

The proposal of spaces, which until now had no designation, with their nominations took place in the municipal plenary session on Monday, being unanimously approved

The distinction implies public recognition towards those individuals and institutions who have been highlighted for their qualities and in the exercise of their profession and/or vocation, showing commitment to the city of Lorca, its culture, and traditions.

Lorca, April 1, 2025. The municipal plenary session in March unanimously approved two motions presented to name three outstanding enclaves in the city under the designation of individuals and institutions that have continued to commit to our city.

The spaces, which did not have a unique identifying name, and their new nominations are as follows:

The space located at the entrance of the artisans’ house will be named Rincón del Artesano Francisco Salas

The restored space, forming a square near the Church of Carmen, in what was the former Carmelite monastery, housing the Viacrucis Museum, will be called Plaza del Paso Morrador

The Lorca-Tourism Autocaravan area will be named «Juan Rafael Miarro López Autocaravan Autocaravan».

Fulgencio Gil emphasized that «society as a whole feels compelled to publicly recognize individuals and entities that have excelled in their qualities or in the exercise of their profession and/or vocation, while demonstrating a continuous contribution to their city, culture, traditions, and customs.»

Regarding the space between the Torre Roja and the main facade of the artisan’s house, the extraordinary contribution of Mr. Francisco Salas Jódar to Lorquina crafts and traditional culture was taken into account, as well as his altruistic contribution to the artisans association. His life has always been linked to crafts, which he professes «with love and pride,» becoming a key figure in the defense and dissemination of current crafts.

Born in the emblematic district of San Cristóbal, Francisco began his career on January 4, 1975. From 2018 to February 2022, he served as activities coordinator and responsible for the Lorca artisan, a public building that acts as its headquarters. From that moment until today, he performs the same functions, but as a volunteer for the mentioned entity, in close collaboration with various entities and associations. Over these 47 years of profession, he collaborated with different local and regional institutions, coordinating participation in various fairs and twinnings with several cities.

Additionally, Purple Step represents a significant number of Lorca residents who participate in the aforementioned brotherhood, historically organizing and leading the Lorca viacrucis, reaching its peak on Friday morning, but attracting believers every Friday and Thursday. It is also a reference in the parishes El Carmen and San José, organizing religious, social, and cultural activities. It is worth noting that a space, forming a square next to the Church of Carmen, in what used to be the former Carmelite Convent, where the Viacrucis Museum is located, has recently been recovered and restored, granting this place the new name of ‘Plaza del Paso Morado’, a recognition of the work of this institution that undoubtedly revalues the most local traditions, dedicating themselves to their work, dedicating themselves to efforts, dedicating themselves to more efforts. Culture and traditions,» concluded Gil Jódar.

Furthermore, the dedication and work put into developing car tourism and the tireless efforts for our city and its surroundings by Juan Rafael Miarro López; and his key effort in creating areas for vehicles in the districts of Lorca, which had a positive impact on the local economy and allowed for the revitalization of these rural areas, the plenary session approved, following the initial request from the caravan association, that the Lorca-Tourism area be named «Juan Rafael Miarro López Autocarvan Area».
