Más de mil lorquinos se capacitan en prevención y autoprotección ante emergencias y catástrofes.

The campaign launched by the council, through the emergency department and the public emergency school, has accumulated over 40,000 hours from April to June of this year, with about a hundred activities.

Actions carried out in schools and institutes stand out, involving members of the Holy Week, community leaders, technical days on lessons learned from «Blackout,» or access courses for new volunteers applying to the civil protection volunteer group, among many others.

This information was provided by emergency mayor, José Martínez, who also highlighted the selection of four Emergency School members from the Municipal Emergency Service for troop bands, officers, and non-commissioned officers, with a future practical phase at the Toledo Infantry Academy.

José Martínez stated: «With all these actions, the Lorca Municipal Council reaffirms its commitment to the continuous improvement of knowledge and training for our professional and volunteer staff, as well as the self-protection capabilities of Lorca residents against emergencies and disasters.»

Lorca, June 25, 2025. Emergency mayor, José Martínez, provided a summary of the training activities carried out between April and June of this year, coordinated and developed by the local council’s public emergency school, noting a successful outcome.

«This training activity amounted to approximately 4,000 hours of training, self-protection, and intervention in emergencies and disasters, representing a significant effort by the department to enhance prevention and self-protection capabilities against emergency situations,» stated Martínez.

«During this second quarter, intensive training activities were conducted in schools and institutes as part of the annual program aimed at promoting self-protection capabilities in emergencies and disasters, as well as first aid training for students and the wider school community.»

The councilor also emphasized actions since early April to prepare members of different Holy Week groups and brotherhoods in «Incident Control in Human Crowds.» «In the same vein, a training day for ‘neighborhood leaders’ in self-protection districts in emergencies and disasters was held yesterday, with over 80 participants including Pedanó mayors and neighborhood association managers.»

Additionally, a technical day on the lessons learned from the «power outage» on April 28, 2025, took place on May 8, engaging the emergency community in Lorca, neighboring municipalities in the provinces of Murcia and Almería, with around a hundred participants. The final document with the day’s conclusions has already been sent to local, regional, and national security and emergency agencies this week.

Furthermore, «all service personnel received a first aid refresher course approved by the chief as part of their ongoing training, and our drone skills were also updated by our drone pilots.»

Specifically, between May and June, the public emergency school organized an entry course for new volunteers facing the civil protection volunteer group, with 15 attendees. The training included an exercise on June 14, a practical activity at the end of the course, involving a mountain rescue in a forest fire setting, where volunteers closely collaborated with professional emergency service staff.

In the prevention field, the emergency situations psychologist from the Municipal Service participated in the National Suicide Prevention Conference organized by Papageno in Ávila, a prominent entity focused on suicide prevention in Spain.

Additionally, during this period, there was a safety course in heavy equipment management, as the municipal service utilized a specialized mixed minicoat in various missions related to the Dana event in Valencia in 2024.

«From the public emergency school, we strive to enhance the teaching capacities of our teaching staff and instructors, with five professionals from our service developing the training course approved by the chief,» added the mayor.

Finally, the participation of 12 professionals in the «Fast Water and Fast Water Rescue» services on June 26 and 27 in the Genil River, Benamejí municipality, in a free training company, is highlighted.

The selection of four Municipal Emergency Service professionals by the UME Emergency School, participating in three as students of the basic emergency course for bands and one as a student of the emergency course for officers and non-commissioned officers, with these courses already commencing in their online phase to extend to the November phase, is also emphasized.
