The president of the region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, defended today in the European committee the transfer of Tajo-Segura as an «example of solidarity between territories» and stated that the new water resilience strategy that the European Commission will present in June should «challenge Member States to promote national hydrological plans».

López Miras addressed these issues in Venice (Italy) today at the meeting of the Committee for the European Committee of the Regions and, more precisely, in the debate on the document called «The vision of agriculture and food», which represents the roadmap of the European Commission for Agriculture for the coming years.

«There are territories that have a large amount of water, and others that affect us greatly. In Spain, there are around 50 basin interconnections, but I want to emphasize one that accounts for more than 50 percent of the vegetables exported by Spain, which is the Tajo-Sazura transfer,» said the president.

In defending basin interconnections and a global vision of water management, López Miras said, «we eagerly await and hope that the water resilience strategy that the commission will present on June 4. We believe it is important to challenge Member States to promote national hydrological plans and promote good water.»

According to the regional leader, Europe needs to specify that «more water infrastructure is needed to store water and transport it to where it is needed, because when we talk about solidarity, we should not only talk about solidarity among people, but also about solidarity between territories».

«We must also bet on the circular management of water. One of the major challenges is the purification and reuse of urban water,» said the president. Therefore, he recalled that compared to the 5% water reuse rate in Europe, «in the region of Murcia, we purify and reuse 98% of urban waters».

For the future of the primary sector, the president said, «Proper water management is essential, especially in a situation of climate change, extreme droughts, and adverse weather events. Water is the basic resource for our farmers.»

Several clauses of administrative simplification and mirror

For López Miras, any decision and any strategy related to the primary sector implemented by the European Union «must involve farmers».

In this sense, he added that it is essential to «impose mirror clauses, that is, to require producers from third countries outside the European Union to comply with the same standards, the same requirements as European Union farmers, particularly to ensure their viability, we must also strengthen the economic sustainability of our farmers».
