The president of the government of the region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, emphasized today that «we face the unpleasant challenge of advancing in decarbonization and energy transition,» making it «urgent» for the central government to approve «as soon as possible» energy «transportation planning that «depends on it, enhances renewable energies, and optimizes the industrial and social development of the region, ensuring a more sustainable and competitive future.»
This planning «is what the region of Murcia needs and what Spain needs to not limit growth, to attract new industries and investments,» said López Miras during the opening ceremony of the solar photovoltaic plant in Cañada (Murcia) built by Zelestra. This company will provide Shell Energy Europe with 105 Gigawatt-Hours per year of clean energy for ten years.
In the face of this future energy planning, the regional government, in coordination with the sector, requested the ministry to include 18 priority actions, involving an investment of at least 250 million euros. These initiatives include the construction of four new stations, the extension of seven existing ones, and the decarbonization of the Espojas valley, with six projects related to green hydrogen.
During his speech, the head of the autonomous government also stated that the region closed 2024 with a historic increase of 21 percent in renewable energy generation, doubling the national average of 11 percent. This way, clean energy already represents 40% of the energy mix, compared to 32.4% the previous year.
«The region is rich in something very precious: the cheapest and cleanest energy, which is the sun. And we take advantage of that privileged position to move towards greater environmental sustainability, greater economies, and greater energy security,» said the president. For López Miras, «energy transition is not just a goal or a beautiful name for a ministry,» but also «an urgent need for the well-being of future generations.»
Energy for more than 23,000 homes
The solar photovoltaic plant opened today in Cañada has 98,616 solar panels and generates enough clean energy to supply more than 23,000 homes, as well as to avoid the emission of 34,500 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
«The energy coming out of this factory allows us to supply a municipality similar to Segura Molina throughout the year, to give us an idea of its production capacity,» said López Miras. He also emphasized that «the region of Murcia leads the energy transition in Spain due to the combination of its natural potential, its industrial fabric, and its professional talent, and with this new plant, we strengthen this management.»
It is an installation with an installed capacity that reaches 50 megawatts. The solar photovoltaic park in Cañada meant the creation of up to 160 jobs in the region during its construction and an investment of 35 million euros.
