López Miras emphasizes that the state of autonomy «gave the voice to the region of Murcia»

The head of the executive presides over the second volume of the ’40 years of autonomy in the Murcia region (1982-2022)’, with which the University of Murcia takes a journey through the institutions, politics, and government.

Remember that «for a long time, this land could not make important decisions regarding its development or defend its interests,» and the state «was a turning point.»

Institutions, politics, and government’

The head of the Regional Executive, Fernando López Miras, chaired today the presentation of the second volume of the ’40 years of autonomy in the Murcia region (1982-2022)’, coinciding with the upcoming celebration of the region on June 9th. During the event, López Miras emphasized that «for a long time, this land could not make important decisions regarding its development or defend its interests, and autonomy was a turning point,» said López Miras, who was accompanied by the President of the Legal Council of the Region of Murcia, Antonio Gómez Fayrén, during the public presentation.

Therefore, the state approved in 1982 «not only helped us better serve our people, but also allowed us to build our own identity. Because our autonomous community is not just an administrative structure: it also reflects a shared history and a uniqueness that deserves to be recognized and protected,» added the autonomous leader.

The book «is the story of how we became adults as an autonomous community,» said López Miras, and in its pages delves into topics such as the electoral system, the role of the executive and the legislature, the transfer of powers, local administration, or the debate on state reform.

Referring to the current political landscape, López Miras called for a return to the spirit in which autonomy was born, based on «agreement and understanding among different parties,» and warned that «institutions should be spaces for compliance, not permanent confrontation.»

Finally, the president urged to continue working «out of respect» to strengthen a real regional culture, especially among the new generations, and stated that «without strong institutions, there is no possible future.»
