La Asamblea Regional rechaza la ILP por el derecho a la vivienda promovida por ciudadanos

PSOE and the mixed group accuse PP and VOX of disregarding an approved initiative with over 16,000 signatures

The Regional Assembly rejected the possession of the Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP) for the right to housing in the region of Mercia. The proposal, promoted by social groups and supported by over 16,000 signatures, received the support of PSOE and the mixed group (Podemos-IU-Verdes-AV), but was rejected with votes against by PP and VOX.

ILP has included, among other measures, compensation for delays in rental assistance, creating an autonomous registry of housing applicants, and guaranteeing that public land remains public. The favorable groups believe that the current regional legislation is unenforceable due to the lack of regulatory development and accuse the regional government of neglecting their domestic powers.

From the socialist parliamentary group, Deputy Miguel Ángel Ortega defended the favorable vote, ensuring that «citizens deserve respect, and this popular legislative initiative is a clear sign that there are thousands of people requesting effective housing policies.»

Ortega criticized that «PP not only legislated squatting, which only affects 0.05% of cases and has not built a single public housing unit in the last eight years.» He also announced that PSOE will re-register the initiative in September and work «in coordination with the housing platform to correct technical flaws and ensure that this law can be discussed and improved as needed.»

In the same line, Podemos Deputy María Marín denounced that «disregarding a citizen’s initiative is an attack against the families, youth, and working class of this land.» Marín reproached PP and Vox for «deciding to bury the voice of over 16,000 people in half an hour, in a scorching July month,» and warned that «as long as justice is served, it will be a fight.»

From the united left side, José Luis Álvarez-Castellanos focused his intervention on the democratic component of ILP. «Today, we are not only debating housing policy but also democracy. This chamber cannot disregard the activity of 16,100 citizens who, for six months, collected signatures that must be debated here,» he said. «We have no right to leave this proposal in a drawer,» he said.

From Vox, Deputy Ignacio Arcas justified the vote against by emphasizing that «the text was rejected by legal services for its weak legislative technique and contains errors that prevent its implementation.» He accused the promoting groups of «misleading citizens with an impossible-to-implement proposal» and argued that «the solution is not in ideological measures but in expanding land, reducing obstacles, and promoting long-term rent.»

On his part, Popular Party Deputy Antonio Landáburu denied that voting against it amounted to disrespecting anyone. «Using housing as a political weapon means not respecting citizens,» he said, advocating for a «balanced, lasting, and efficient model that protects the most vulnerable without burdening them with private mortgages.» According to Landáburu, ILP «will not solve real access problems and may create new obstacles.»
