Rosa Mª Medina, Edil of Education: «Her example inspires new generations and shows that science needs the talent of all people, regardless of gender.»
February 7, 2025. The Lorca Municipal Council, José Ibáñez Martín Institute, Pancemar Foundation, and the Academy of Sciences of the Mercia Region, pay tribute to the heritage of women in the history of chemistry with an exhibition in Lorca. This was announced on Friday by the Mayor of Education, Rosa María Medina Mínguez, along with the representatives of these entities during the presentation of this exhibition designed by the chemistry professor at the University of Alicante, Dr. Sergio Menargues, and that this Will be open to the public.
Rosa María Medina emphasized that Lorca will be the epicenter of a cultural and educational proposal that seeks to «offer visibility to the fundamental role of women in history that decisively contributed to the development of chemistry. From pioneering figures like Marie-Anne Paulze, key in the works of Antoine Lavoisier, to great references like Marie Curie, scientists have transformed scientific knowledge over the centuries.
And she added that «however, many of them were unfairly forgotten or silenced. Recognizing their heritage is not just a matter of historical justice, but an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of gender equality in the scientific field. Her example inspires new generations and shows that science needs the talent of all people, regardless of gender.
The exhibition «The Legacy of Women in the History of Chemistry» will open on February 10 with the conference «Women in Chemistry: Spanish and Forgotten», by Sergio Menargues, designer of the exhibition, and can be visited at IES José Ibáñez Martín, from 5 to 8 pm, with the possibility of organizing educational visits for schools in the municipality by reservation at phone 968 466 185.
Furthermore, with the purpose of sparking interest in science among the younger ones, the Pancemar Foundation, in collaboration with the city of Lorca, organized the «Women Scientists» competition, aimed at primary and secondary school students in the municipality. «Participants will be able to present individual works on the role of women in science, and the top three projects in each category will receive prizes consisting of scientific starter kits, such as microscopes and robots,» said the Mayor of Education.
«This competition aims not only to offer visibility to scientists, but also to stimulate critical thinking, scientific curiosity, and creativity among students. Initiatives that promote scientific vocations are essential in a more technical world, with global challenges that require innovative solutions,» said Medina Mínguez.
Science, in addition to being a tool for technological advancement, is an essential component of culture. Initiatives like this exhibition and this competition show that scientific dissemination can bring knowledge to the general public, promote analytical thinking, and highlight the value of teamwork to build a better-informed and prepared society. «It is a proposal that invites reflection, learning, and inspiration, reminding us that the history of science is incomplete without the voices of the women who have shaped it, so we invite all Lorca residents, regardless of age, to go to Ibáñez Martín and visit it,» concluded the education councilor.
