Expertos en cáncer digestivo se reúnen en Hospital Santa Lucía para avanzar en diagnóstico y tratamiento

The General Hospital of the University of Santa Lucia coordinated a monographic day on the progress in the diagnosis and treatment of digestive cancer, gathering one hundred healthcare professionals and regional oncology experts yesterday, Friday, June 20, and until today, Saturday, 21.

The event «Oncocctago» also features the participation of the Head of the Medical Oncology Service at Santa Lucia Hospital, Teresa García, along with representatives from the other two regional services, Arrix Clinical Hospital and Morales Meseuger. Additionally, highlight the participation of the President of the European Society for Medical Oncology, Andrés Cervantes, Cartagena, Head of the Medical Oncology Service at Valencia Clinical Hospital.

The main objective is to share the latest progress in research, early diagnosis, personalized medicine, and new targeted therapies applied to gastrointestinal tumors, especially those of the colon, rectum, stomach, and pancreas, and cross-cutting issues such as patient communication and cancer patient nutrition.

Digestive cancers, especially colon and rectum, are very common worldwide and in Spain. In Spain, by 2025, the forecast is for approximately 75,000 new diagnoses (almost 45,000 colorectal, approximately 10,000 pen cancers, and less frequently liver, esophagus, and stomach).

There are no recent estimates in Murcia, despite having one of the 12 cancer population registries in Spain. In 2023, 8,259 new cases were diagnosed (1,167 colorectal, 200 pancreas, 180 gastric, 140 liver, 70 gallbladder).

Teresa García emphasizes that «not all cases are seen in oncology, only those that require medical oncological treatment. In our service, a reference in health areas 2 and 8, I saw 1,300 new patients in 2024, of which 450 were digestive cancer, including 274 esophagogastric, 45 hepatobiliary, and 52.»

«In 2024, we administered oral or intravenous antineoplastic treatment to 1,563 patients, of which around 430 have digestive cancer, including 270 colorectal, 68 esophagogastric, 54 pancreas, 35 hepatobiliary). At the University Hospital of Los Arcos del LOS ARCOS, which I started in 2025). Short, short, short, short.

Oncology and daytime hospital services

The Day Hospital at the University Hospital complex in Cartagena has administered over 10,000 cycles of intravenous or subcutaneous antineoplastic treatment, most commonly for patients with breast, lung, or digestive cancer, representing 700 patients per month.

On the other hand, the Oncology Service has participated in over 20,000 consultations in 2021, with 1,100 corresponding to new patients and the rest being follow-up consultations for already known patients undergoing treatment or follow-up checks.

The figures for detecting new cases remain around a thousand annually, which is the trend of recent years. The majority of the service’s activity consists of follow-up consultations because one of the most important parts is monitoring and controlling these patients.

The oncology service, in collaboration with others such as pathology and pharmacy, has several lines of research and collaboration in clinical trials, especially in melanoma tumors of the colon, lung, and malignant, allowing us to open up new expectations for improving patients.
