López Miras emphasizes that this action, funded with 3.6 million euros, is «very necessary to prevent future floods»

The community started on Friday the works to create the new durable drainage system for rainwater in Lorquí, which will be located in the El Sallar I industrial estate. During the event, the President of the Government of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, emphasized that it is «a very important and necessary action to prevent future floods.»
«A study was conducted on what exactly was the origin of these floods and what was the best way to provide a solution, and this work that begins today is the result,» said López Miras.
The project, with a budget of 3,638,000 euros, aims to reduce flooding and traction problems caused by heavy rains in Papa Ali and the surrounding areas of the industrial estate. This will allow entrepreneurs and workers, as well as the city’s residents, to carry out their activities more normally and also improve road safety, according to regional government sources.
«This infrastructure responds to the regional government’s commitment to Lorquí and its residents. It is an action to combat the effects of heavy rains, but also to ensure people’s safety before these increasingly frequent torrential episodes,» said the head of the regional executive.
López Miras recalled that the government of the Murcia region works «permanently» to ensure safety against major weather events, «investing and developing actions in those more sensitive areas, like this Lorquí enclave.» This particular area had limited capacity to handle the leaks passing through the industrial estate.
The actions are considering generating an efficient surface water drainage infrastructure, which will provide continuity for the natural drainage system, allowing, on the one hand, the collection of drainage water and, on the other hand, storage in plots. Additionally, two tanks are included with a total retention capacity of 50,000 cubic meters.
Within this group of actions are the collection channels and grids, as well as changes in the pumping on Río Segre Street, to favor the flow between the plot destined for a green area or open spaces.
The project, designed under accessibility criteria, also considers the creation of a leisure elements area, such as children’s play areas, benches, or botanical routes, among others, which will allow the use development as a free spatial area. Similarly, it will have green areas, due to the planting of native species that will allow better landscape management.
The forecast is that the works, developed based on durable urban drainage techniques, will be completed by the end of the year. The budget of 3,638,000 euros is financed 79 percent by European Next Generation funds, through the coastal conservation block and the water resources of the transformation and resilience recovery plan, and the remaining 21 percent with funds from the autonomous community in the Murcia region.
