The regional government is advancing in the identification and strengthening of an «ecological infrastructure,» a network of natural habitats essential for biodiversity and ecological balance. With this objective, the Ministry of Environment, Universities, Research, and Mar Menor held an informative day this morning aimed at municipal managers and technicians, discussing the «regional strategy for ecological infrastructure and its ecological connectivity and restoration» in local territorial planning.
Councilor Juan María Vázquez emphasized the importance of this initiative and stated that «the main challenge is to avoid biological isolation and the impoverishment of protected areas. To achieve this, we must ensure ecological connectivity and promote nature-based solutions that will enhance our ability to adapt to climate change.»
The strategy aims to integrate innovative tools that allow municipalities to incorporate these concepts into their urban and environmental policies. On that day, over a hundred technicians from environmental management companies, unions, official schools, foundations, universities, and representatives from about twenty municipalities were present.
The regional strategy for ecological infrastructure and connectivity and ecological restoration aims to establish an ecological network of natural and semi-natural areas, both rural and urban. Its development is based on a participatory approach involving local administrations, scientific institutions, economic and social agents, as well as the general public.
Among other objectives, the strategy supports the definition of ecological corridors, which could involve improving the Iberian Lynx, among other species, or integrating agricultural spaces with natural value, in addition to enhancing connectivity between different protected natural areas.
Alongside citizen participation mechanisms that will continue to operate during the drafting process, there is currently a communication channel open with municipalities to facilitate the collection of technical data that will contribute to the planning and evaluation of the strategy. «We want municipalities to play a leading role in this process, integrating concepts such as urban renaturalization, ecological connectivity, and mitigation of the effects of global warming in their urban plans,» added the councilor.
A day for learning and collaboration
This morning’s event featured national experts in the field of ecological infrastructure, such as the dean of the Official College of Agronomists of Galicia and president of the Spanish Association of Public Parks and Gardens, Pedro Calaza; as well as the technician responsible for the General Directorate of Natural Heritage and Climate Action, Mariano Vicente.
The meetings included roundtable discussions, group work dynamics, and «network» spaces to promote collaboration between municipalities and other key actors in territorial management. The day concluded with a moderated debate with the Regional Secretary of Energy, Sustainability, and Climate Action, María Cruz Ferreira, in which representatives from the municipalities of Caravaca de la Cruz, Molina de Segura, and Murcia participated.
The regional government is committed to a territorial model that ensures the conservation of ecosystems and the provision of essential environmental services for society. «Our green infrastructure strategy is not just a planning tool but an opportunity to build a more sustainable and resilient future for the Murcia region,» said Councilor Juan María Vázquez.
