This was conveyed by Mayor Lorca during an unprecedented institutional law, organized this morning in Murcia, under the slogan «water, human consumption, and employment,» where nearly a hundred mayors from the Spanish Levante gathered in what was a historic event in defense of the Taju-See transfer.
With this act, an immediate halt to any measure involving an unjustified reduction in transvase flows and the opening of a real dialogue process, as well as urgently creating a national water with water with water.
«We will continue to fight to defend what is ours. Water does not belong to anyone; it belongs to all Spaniards. The most technical agricultural sector in Europe deserves the flows that belong to them. They want to turn the elevator into a desert, and we will not allow it.»
«With these restrictions, we will be forced to abandon half of the farmland, offering food sovereignty to countries that are not even in the EU, with more serious quality food, without knowing where they come from or the conditions under which they are harvested.»
«We want a government to take measures to defend us… not attack us and harm us, causing thousands of families to break up, generating depopulation and carrying out the transmission that the sector so badly needs.»
Lorca, June 5, 2025. The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil Jódar, expressed «the most absolute rejection of what is a direct blow to the economy, employment, and the future of Lorca. The closure of the Spanish Levante.»
But he was not alone in his statements. He was accompanied by approximately a hundred mayors from different places in the Spanish Levante, in an unprecedented institutional unity for the Tajo-Segura transfer, organized by the Central Union of Irrigators of the Tajo-Segura Aquifer and the Local Council of Murcia, with the rest of the participating municipalities; who joined under the slogan «water, human consumption, and employment,» against the attack on the Tajo-Segura transfer.
An appointment in which, in addition to the mayors, political representatives, stakeholders, and civil society were also present, during which a manifesto was read in defense of this important water infrastructure that provides for around 3 million people who rely on it.
A document in which «our strongest opposition to any decision that reduces a single drop of water in the transfer and jeopardizes the water supply in our territories and, with it, the present and future of millions of citizens» and that was ultimately signed by the attending protagonists. «Our municipalities are global references in the rational and efficient use of water, due to modernization and efficiency.»
«Today we unite here for the defense of water as a driver of sustainability, employment, and development. From now on, with these restrictions, we reach out to local administrations, which are closer to the citizens, addressing the difficulties generated by a central government that is unaware of the reality, with this modification of the operational rules of the Tăjura transfer.»
«It causes a sector that is the most technical in Europe and deserves the flows that correspond and indicate. Because water does not belong to humans, nor to Pedro Sánchez; water belongs to everyone.»
«The closure of the Tajo Segura transfer will be the biggest environmental mistake in Spain’s history by the state, forcing the abandonment of half of the farmland. We are witnessing mistreatment that affects the continuity of the agricultural sector in this country.»
«And, for all Spaniards to know, if Spain has experienced an industrial shift, it will now be much worse. With these measures, all we do is offer food sovereignty to countries that are not even in the EU… low-quality food, not knowing where they come from or the conditions under which they are harvested.»
Undoubtedly, Lorca will be the most affected region by the closure of the Tajo-Segura transfer, as it will imply a real social, labor, and economic setback. Thousands of hectares of farmland are at risk. We are talking about missing opportunities for our youth, concluding generational relief, depopulating the entire region’s area.»
«We want to express our firm and unwavering support for the primary sector, farmers, agricultural workers, and irrigators who are powerless against a Spanish government that, instead of defending us. Therefore, the future of thousands of families cannot be toyed with.»
With this law, the Spanish Government and the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, an immediate halt to any measure involving an unjustified reduction in transvase flows and the opening of a real dialogue process with the autonomous communities, municipalities, irrigators, and social agents.
Furthermore, the first participant has called for the urgent creation of a national groundwater layer, directing a large state pact to launch a national hydrological plan that guarantees solidarity, technical, sustainable, and transparent water resources, addressing the needs of all territories.
*The manifesto was read by various professional profiles: actor Julio Navarro, cyclist Luis León Sánchez, Dean of Roads, Canals, and Ports in Murcia, Alejandro Lázaro; Miriam Fuertes Quintanilla, president of the Chamber of Commerce in Murcia; Cristina Portillo Muñoz, director of Ceip Nuestra Señora de Arrixaca; Manuel Molina Boix, former head of Internal Medicine Service at the Virgen de la Arrixaca Clinical Hospital; Manuel Herrera Ros, multidisciplinary artist from the Muher team; María Teresa Marín Torres, history of art professor at the University of Murcia, director of the Salzillo Museum; Macarena Zapata Sánchez, granddaughter and daughter of farmers and agricultural workers; and Tati García Sánchez, journalist.
