The informational brochures will be distributed with recommendations and advice that citizens should follow regarding smoking, as well as information about the health problems associated with consumption, cancer, lungs, and heart diseases.
In collaboration with the Health Center in San Diego, more than 245 students from Juan González attended the event.

On May 30, 2025, Health Councilor Belén Díaz Arcas from the Lorca Municipal Council visited the information booth set up on Constitution Street on Friday to commemorate World No Tobacco Day, which takes place this Saturday, May 31.
Belén Díaz announced that the information booth will be set up in the morning between 9:30 and 12:30, where informational brochures with recommendations and advice that citizens should follow, both smokers and non-smokers, will be distributed. Additionally, a «healthy walk» was organized in collaboration with the Health Center in San Diego, with over 245 students from Juan González participating, along with a slogan contest involving fifth and sixth-grade students from the school.
Our goal is to inform the population, emphasizing the importance of the issue.
Currently, tobacco consumption and related products, as well as exposure to their emissions, are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, being a major risk factor for preventing the most common non-communicable diseases. In Spain, nearly 52,000 deaths occur each year due to this issue. Extrapolated to our region, this would mean over 1500 deaths per year as a result of tobacco consumption. Moreover, in our region, around 23.9% of the population between 16 and 65 years old are smokers, with a higher prevalence in men (26.5%) compared to women (21.3%).
Furthermore, 19% of the population reports having tried electronic cigarettes in the last year. The use of electronic cigarettes is increasing among young people and is a gateway to tobacco consumption. Among teenagers who have tried electronic cigarettes, 46% are girls (48.1%) and 43.8% are boys, while 55.8% of teenagers who use electronic cigarettes also consume tobacco.
Although daily tobacco consumption has decreased in recent years compared to previous figures due to implemented control measures, we must continue to educate and raise awareness about the harms caused by tobacco, not only to the respiratory system but to the entire body, and the particular consequences for individuals.
