Nuevo sistema de transporte público en Murcia permite viajes ilimitados por solo 1 euro al día

Murcia can enjoy unlimited travelers on public transport from Murcia «for just over a euro a day». Therefore, the Lumpar fare will allow buses, trams, buses, and night services to be used for less than 35 euros per month, which for students will be reduced to 25 euros.

This was announced on Friday at a press conference by the board of advisors for mobility, economic management, and contracting, José Francisco Muñoz, who stated that the public consultation to establish the new fare ordinance that will govern the new transportation model will be launched next week.

The process involves a public consultation that starts now, to then go through the initial plenary approval and finally the final approval, but it is something that «can be implemented in advance,» justified Muñoz.

An ordinance that, as explained, will have six fundamental axes on which the new fare system will be based. Firstly, there will be price equity for public transport in neighborhoods and districts; he said that «almost nine million districts have been used this year and intend to grow in the coming years with the new transportation model.»

Therefore, prices will be fair, and the single ticket will cost 1.15 euros with a discount to 1.10 euros for public transport travelers coming from longer distances.

Existing price differences will disappear with transfers between different operations and the Murcia tram, for example, to have a single operator.

Another axis that the advisor describes as «fundamental» is that «the recurrent use of public transport» will be rewarded, meaning more trips will be cheaper.

The goal is to «promote the use of public transport by creating flat rates, but with additional transport obligations such as using public transport as the first option being improved.»

A system, in general terms, that «will adapt to the needs of all groups and all needs and requirements,» as it incorporates free users of public transport, low mobility caregivers, creates the youth category, and establishes additional bonuses for students, large families, and pensioners.

The fare system will also be simplified because, as the advisor said, «currently, we have more than 20 different fares, with different bonuses, each of them, and the current bonuses will be reduced to just 7 categories.»

New technologies are also being incorporated to «opt for the transportation model in a simple, easy, and convenient way.» Despite all this, Muñoz believes that public transport is experiencing an unprecedented improvement in the fare system, where, in addition to improving frequencies, lines, programs, and fleet renewal, nightlife is included.

And, he emphasized, «there will be no additional cost for the provision of the service, but it will be included in the fare system as an additional service that will not cost the user.»

A series of additional bonuses are also established: the family bonus will be reduced below the cost of using the trip; Many special families will be free; And the social bonus, pensioner or retiree will remain free.

Muñoz said that it will be the city council that will mainly cover the cost of improving the service because it will not impact the user’s price.

The creation of an intermodal network will mean that transports «are completely free for the first time between different modes and are equivalent to city residents and the cost of distances, paying for the first time for the use of public transport.»
