López Miras will meet with the European Commissioner for Agriculture to «stop the outrage» of reducing the transfer
The president reminded the Regional Assembly that the «axe» of the Spanish government on this infrastructure «will put a situation of social exclusion and risk of poverty in the 300,000 families in the region that depend on the transfer».
He also requested a meeting with Pedro Sánchez «to provide explanations»
López Miras appears in front of the regional assembly plenary
The president of the Mercia region government, Fernando López Miras, announced today during his appearance in front of the Regional Assembly plenary that he will meet with the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen, to «stop the outrage that is the cut and closure of the Tairjo-Segoradora transfer by the government». «.». «.». «.». «.
During his speech, López Miras also confirmed that he requested a meeting with the President of the central government, Pedro Sánchez, «to provide explanations» for reducing the transfer by 50 percent. This drastic reduction in transferred flows is, according to López Miras, a decision that «will automatically place social exclusion and risk of poverty on the 300,000 families in the Murcia region who directly or indirectly rely on the transfer. The consequence of reducing the transfer is poverty».
The head of the autonomous government emphasized that the aqueduct «is a key tool for us to be the major producers of fruits and vegetables in Spain and Europe» and noted that the reduction «affects not only agriculture but also the agro-industry, logistics, services, and investments».
According to the President, in 2014, a consensus was reached between the Government of Spain and the autonomous communities affected by the transfer, which established «clear rules telling us when they could be transferred and when not. Because important and state issues, like water, must start with agreements». However, «on January 23, 2024, the Spanish Government unilaterally violates the consensus on the operational rules of the transfer and approves a reduction».
For López Miras, the reduction of the aqueduct inaugurated 46 years ago «is much more egregious not only for violating this consensus and agreement but because it comes when there is more water in Spain».
«How can a 50 percent transfer reduction be proposed when the header has 1,600 cubic hectometers? To stop sending here, will it go anywhere else?» questioned the president.
Finally, López Miras reiterated that we want to «condemn the future of the Murcia region», although he reaffirmed that «we will not allow it», and in this defense, he expressed the hope that «I hope there is a unity of political action».
