A total of 492 women received attention at the Center for Victims of Sexual Violence in the region of Murcia (CAIVAX) «La Jacaranda» in the first months of the year, which represents 41 more than in the same period of the previous year. However, the number of women who participated for the first time in the center between January and is smaller, especially with 11 new cases lower than in 2024, which means that 108 women were treated for the first time.
The Minister of Social Policy, Families, and Equality, Conchita Ruiz, provided these data after meeting with professionals from Caivax and clarified that «the highest number of women participating this year corresponds to those previously registered, who require continuous professional monitoring, either in the psychological, legal, or social field.»
Ruiz explained that «a very common behavior in victims is to feel ashamed or scared to come out because they have suffered sexual assault, so in most cases, the first interventions are by phone.» Through the professionals at Caivax, they receive advice and guidance to go to medical and police services. «Only when they feel emotionally stronger do they decide to go to the center,» said the counselor.
Furthermore, in the almost two years of operation of the Center, there is a significant proportion of women who identify as victims of sexual violence years after suffering assault. In this sense, 53 percent of women report having suffered sexual violence as minors and 47 percent in adulthood.
«Some of them did not know, at first, that they were victims of sexual violence, because they normalized certain behaviors with their partners, family members, or coworkers. Finally, when they become aware and overcome the fear, they seek psychological support to overcome past traumas,» said Ruiz.
The comprehensive care center for victims of sexual violence in the region of Murcia, «La Jacaranda,» has a team of 4 psychologists, a social educator, a social integrator, two legal advisors, and a social worker who provides specialized support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Together, they carried out 1,708 individual interventions for 2025. The most requested service is psychological care with 961 interventions, followed by legal counseling with 381. In the fields of social work and social education, the number of interventions reaches 295 and 71 respectively.

A Protocol to Improve Victim Care
The region of Murcia has an inter-institutional coordination protocol, the first of its kind developed jointly between the regional administration and the professionals involved in the care of victims (health, social, judicial, police, and education), to ensure comprehensive assistance for women and adolescents who have experienced sexual violence.
The protocol details the guidelines that professionals must follow and includes mechanisms for addressing various forms of sexual violence against women, such as sexual harassment, sexual exploitation, or digital violence. It also includes guidance and advice for environmental and family members requiring support and assistance.
