López Miras appears to update the situation in the region of Murcia after the blackout
The president of the regional government of Mercia, Fernando López Miras, today thanked the effectiveness and coordination of the autonomous executive response to the power outage that affected the entire country yesterday. «From the very beginning, the crisis office was permanently gathered at the regional emergency center until early morning,» he explained, ensuring that «in constant coordination with the municipalities and the implementation of measures that contributed to the outage did not mean that people had greater damages.»
In contrast, López Miras lamented the lack of communication from the central government: «For six hours of uncertainty, the Government of Spain did not communicate with anyone, with autonomous communities or citizens.» In his opinion, «the blackout shows the absolute lack of coordination, decision, and action from the central government.» López Miras provided an update on the situation in the region of Mercia, after meeting with the regional government and emergency directors.
Regarding the management of the community, López Miras stated that «from the very beginning, the priority was to ensure medical assistance and, above all, that the emergency was covered.» Therefore, the Murcian Health Service purchased 85,000 liters of fuel to have enough reserves to ensure the energy supply in health centers.
López Miras emphasized that «throughout the night, electricity has been fully restored throughout the region of Murcia» and that the supply «recovered one hundred percent by 4:04 in the morning.» Additionally, the Emergency Coordination Center participated in «3,200 calls related to minor incidents, traffic, trapped individuals, and requests for information.»
Regarding medical assistance, López Miras insisted that urgent activity «was permanently guaranteed» and reported that public hospitals in the region of Mercia attended a total of 2,288 patients in the hospital’s emergency services yesterday, as well as 2,400 notifications to emergency services.
Recognition of citizens and professionals
On behalf of the regional government, López Miras conveyed thanks to the «professionals from each of the public services» and also «the workers at the Firefighters Center who redistributed their efforts to restore normality.»
In particular, he emphasized the «civic behavior of the population» and thanked «the responsibility shown by citizens when facing an abnormal, unexpected, and inexplicable situation.»
Request for explanations from the central government
Once the emergency situations were over, the president asked the central government: «It’s time to know what happened and take responsibility.» As he stated, yesterday, «the central government did not respond to the needs I requested,» but «fortunately, we did not have to wait for them to implement the necessary measures.»
Furthermore, López Miras expressed concern about the lack of energy forecast in Spain, «especially when a few weeks ago, the Spanish government repeated that there was no risk of a blackout.»
Finally, the president requested a review of the state energy policy: «While we advocate in Europe for the need for automatic energy sufficiency and more and more countries are in favor of not just maintaining, but expanding the number of nuclear power plants, in Spain we are reducing the capacity to generate energy and weakening it even further.» In this regard, he concluded that the «causes of the blackout must be investigated, responsibilities must be identified, and the economic impact must also be assessed.»
