Lorca, April 1, 2025. The second phase of the works at the maternity and gynecology ward of Rafael Méndez Hospital in Lorca will start this summer, to have the Center completely renewed and adapted. A total of 199,700 euros are being invested.
The Mayor of Health in the city of Lorca, Belén Díaz, accompanied the Minister of Health, Juan José Pedreño, on a visit this morning to Lorca Hospital, where it was noted that in the first phase of the works, already completed, the doors of the rooms were replaced to accommodate the new beds.
The second phase of the work, which has already been awarded and will start this summer, will involve the renovation of the Fontaneía installation, replacing windows to improve insulation and air conditioning, as well as the renovation of isolation chambers.
Pedreño explained that the remodeling of the ward «is being done gradually, so as not to disrupt patient care and to ensure it is not uncomfortable for patients.»
More than 1,300 births per year
Rafael Méndez Hospital is a reference hospital for the municipalities of Aldo, Águilas, Lorca, Puerto Lumbreras, and Totana – last year, over 1,300 deliveries were carried out. In the maternity and gynecology ward, approximately 1,800 women were admitted in 2024.
The staff attending to this ward consists of nearly 40 professionals, including doctors, nurses, and medical care technicians.
In his speech, the Minister of Health highlighted that the hospital staff has increased to over 500 employees in the last five years, and the number of professionals in Zone III, both in hospital care and primary care, increased by 25% in 2020, reflecting the strong commitment of this regional government to the hospital.
The remodeling of the maternity and gynecology ward at Rafael Méndez Hospital adds to the latest improvements at the center, such as the implementation of new emergency facilities a year ago, which involved the remodeling and expansion of the space to reach 2,000 square meters.
This work, according to the Minister of Health, «expanded the emergency section to more than double the care for adult and pediatric patients, with an investment of over 1.5 million euros.»
Furthermore, he mentioned the recent establishment of the complex abdominal wall surgery unit, which applies and develops a pioneering surgical technique in the Murcia region, «providing hope to patients previously considered inoperable due to their abdominal pathology and setting a benchmark in healthcare services.»
In conclusion, health advisor Belén Díaz wanted to express gratitude to the autonomous community for their ongoing commitment to improving health and care in the Murcia region, with strategies and policies that consider infrastructure and services, as well as the continuous care and support for the professionals involved.
