Propur Pas conmemora el 25º aniversario del descenso penitenciario de la Cristo Cristiano con un extenso programa de actividades.

The mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, inaugurated a photographic exhibition with over one hundred images and videos that explore the tradition of Holy Week in Lorca. The exhibition is on display at the Guevara Palace until March 27th.

As part of the activities, there will also be events at the Church of the Virgin Mary and an extraordinary concert featuring the music of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Sorrows, which will take place at the El Calvario Plaza.

On March 11, 2025, Mayor Fulgencio Gil Jódar, along with the President of the Purple Step, Ángel Ltorre, inaugurated the extraordinary photography exhibition «25th Anniversary of the Penitential Procession of Christ of the Sacred Christ of Mercy.» This exhibition showcases over one hundred photographs and videos depicting the evolution of this tradition initiated by the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ a quarter of a century ago.

The inauguration coincided with the announcement of upcoming events to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the penitential descent of the Happy Christ. These events include the exhibition at the baroque hall of the Guevara Palace, which will be open until March 27th; a liturgy in honor of the Happy Christ of Mercy at the Church of the Virgin Mary on April 3rd at 7:30 p.m.; and an extraordinary fraternity concert by Our Lady of the Virgin of Sorrows (White Step) on April 5th at the El Calvario Plaza starting at 9:00 p.m.

Mayor Fulgencio Gil emphasized the recent opening of the «Viacrucis Museum» to enhance the preservation and promotion of the Viacrucis, its monumental route, and the landscape complex of El Calvario. He highlighted the cultural, ethnographic, and intangible heritage of the region and its significance.

The Purple Step took the initiative in 2000 to organize the penitential descent from the Major Hermitage of El Calvario to the Church of Carmen every Wednesday night, carrying the Blessed Christ of Mercy, symbolizing Christ’s age at crucifixion. This tradition has endured and attracts visitors each year.

«These events commemorating this occasion demonstrate a strong commitment to enhancing Holy Week in Lorca and promoting our tourism beyond holiday figures. The photographic displays, religious ceremonies, and Cofrade music concerts once again showcase the rich cultural and historical heritage that Lorca holds dear, rooted in our oldest traditions,» stated Mayor Lorca.

During the inauguration, Mayor Gil Jódar also highlighted the historical evolution of El Calvario, from the simple iron crosses with decorated chapels in the late 17th century to the artistic importance of the main sketch, where the original image of Christ of Mercy was found. The current statue presides over the main chapel of El Calvario and was crafted in 1944 by Isabel Biscarri Cuyás. This revered image underwent restoration this year by the Municipal Restoration Workshop of Lorca to preserve its devotion among the residents.

Additionally, Muvic hosts the extraordinary photography exhibition «Lorquino Viarucis in Holy Week in Lorca,» curated by photographer David Giner Aejón, showcasing the evolution of this tradition from its early recordings to the present day. This exhibition will be open until April 4th, Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary and the opening of the Viacrucis Museum have received collaboration from Lorca through the Department of Culture, Tourism, and Development.
