Joaquín Buendía officially resigns from the position he has held since June 2015 and has led for the past ten years, the last two terms with an absolute majority.
The first mayor and deputy treasurer and organization advisor of the Local Council of Alcantarilla, Paqui Terol, takes over from Joaquín Buendía in the Mayor’s Office, following his resignation in the regular April plenary, and until the extraordinary plenary session to be held in the next ten business days.
During his speech, Buendía thanked the citizens of Alcantarilla for the ten years he served as mayor, stating that it was «the greatest honor for any mayor.»
He also expressed gratitude to the Popular Party and its president, Fernando López Miras, for their trust, to the three government teams and the three municipal corporations they presided over, to municipal employees, associations, clubs, groups, and businesses «that contributed to building a better future for Alcantarilla» and his family.
Regarding his resignation, he explained that «it was not easy, but I will never see all the projects completed, as there will always be more, and I believe that ten years of total dedication are enough, now that Alcantarilla is in a growth phase, thanks to the government team.»
«I have full confidence that they will continue to develop the projects that are currently underway and those that will come, with the person who has been my support during these years, who is known by all municipal councils and who has a charisma, a willingness, and a professional rigor that will honor the name of the first mayor of Alcantarilla, Paqui Terol,» he added.
Other Issues
In addition, the plenary agreed to request the immediate transfer of funds committed by the Ministry of Finance to the 2025 delivery account from the Government of Spain, to ensure the financial stability of municipalities, following a proposal from the Popular Party. The plenary also expressed rejection of tariffs imposed by the United States.
