With 8,046 registered, the region is the fifth community with the highest number of victims per 10,000 women.
The judicial bodies in the region of Murcia received 8,046 complaints of gender-based violence, 9.6% lower than in 2023, the year when 8,898 complaints were recorded, according to data collected by the Statistics Service for internal and gender violence and made public on Monday.
The rate of gender-based violence victims per 10,000 women was 92 in the region, a figure higher than the national average (74.2) and the fifth highest among communities, only smaller than those of the Balearic Islands (118.7), Navarre (102.5), the Canary Islands (95.1), and the Valencian Community (94.9).
In 2024, the courts specializing in violence against women issued 1,627 protection orders, 5.6% less than in 2023, and handed down 2,516 sentences, a decrease of 13%, according to sources from the Superior Court of Murcia Region (TSJMU), in a statement.
Seventy-two percent of the complaints in court and at the police station were filed directly by the victims at the police station, a proportion that remained stable for another year. The percentage is much higher than complaints filed by the victim’s family members, which account for 2.4% of the total.
Complaints directly derived from police reports accounted for 18.8%; those originating in certain areas, 5.4%; and those filed by third parties, 1.3%.
The rate of gender-based violence victims per 10,000 women was 74.2 in Spain, five points lower than in 2023.
Above the national average were the Balearic Islands, with a rate of 118.7 per 10,000 women; Navarre, with 102.5; the Canary Islands, with 95.1; Valencian Community, with 94.9; Murcia, with 92; Andalusia, with 82.6; and Madrid, with 78. Lower rates were recorded in Cantabria, with 66.8; Aragon, with 64.2; Asturias, with 61.5; Catalonia, with 60.9; Castilla-La Mancha, with 60.8; Basque Country, with 56.4; Extremadura, with 55.5; La Rioja, with 52.4; Galicia, with 51.6; and Castilla y Leon, with 46.8.
Nearly two-thirds of the women victims registered in 2024 (63.9%) were Spanish.
The number of women victims who accepted the dispensation from the obligation to testify (444) decreased by 2.6% compared to 2023. The percentage of victims making this decision was 6.2%, lower than the national average, which stood at 10%.
1,311 Protection Orders
In 2024, a total of 1,627 protection orders were requested, 5.6% less than in 2023 in the judicial bodies (violence against women courts and regular courts). Among them, 1,311 were requested in one category and 316 in another, 6% and 4% less than in 2023, respectively, were requested by the judicial bodies in the region.
The judicial bodies also approved a total of 3,486 criminal judicial measures for the protection of victims (women and minors) derived from protection orders and other precautionary measures. The most common measures in criminal cases were regular orders (1,138) and communication bans (1,173).
Additionally, the judicial bodies issued a total of 1,090 civil precautionary measures aimed at protecting women and minors, pending the resolution of the criminal process. The most common measures were related to food provision (265), followed by housing allocation (226). Furthermore, in 285 cases, visitation rights were suspended, in 100 cases custody was granted, and in 14 cases parental authority was granted.
Nearly 9 out of 10 sentences were convictions
Last year, the percentage of convictions handed down by the judicial bodies (violence against women courts, criminal courts, and provincial courts) in cases related to gender-based violence remained very similar to those in 2023, when it stood at 89.2% of the total.
A total of 2,498 sentences were issued in 2024, of which 2,308 were convictions and 204 (10.8%) were acquittals.
The highest percentage of convictions of offenders occurred, as in previous years, in violence against women courts, with 97.7%, and in provincial courts, with 94% of total sentences. Criminal courts imposed penalties in 75.5% of cases prosecuted.
Criminal courts, which handled offenses punishable by up to five years in prison, issued 592 sanctions, of which 447 (75.5%) resulted in convictions.
Provincial Courts
Provincial courts, whose sections have specialized in violence against women, emphasized the most serious crimes, punishable by custodial sentences, issued 17 sentences, of which 16 (94.4%) were convictions.
Furthermore, last year, juvenile courts adjudicated on cases of violence against women in 18 minors, 6 more than in 2023. Measures were imposed in all cases, with 16 being Spanish nationals and 2 of other nationalities.
