After the storms last March, the Council of Ministers declared on Tuesday the region of Murcia, along with 10 other autonomous communities, as an area severely affected by a civil protection emergency
Fulgencio Gil, mayor: «I congratulate the state for hearing our requests. This is good news, but until the document is published in the Official State Gazette and we know the extent of the coverage, we must be cautious»
Lorca, April 2, 2025. «This is not the first time we have faced a disaster in the municipality that has left not only humans but also material damage; we know what we are doing. Since the storm occurred in a very emblematic area, we need to restore our resilience capacity, in order to declare our city and the ‘catastrophic zone’ taking into account the magnitude of the consequences».
This was stated by the mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, after the announcement made by the Minister of the Interior yesterday, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, in which it was mentioned that the Council of Ministers had declared the region of Murcia, along with other ten autonomous communities, as severely affected by a civil protection emergency, following other episodes in March.
«Now, more than ever, we expect a coordinated and appropriate action from the Ministry of the Interior. From the city of Lorca, as far as I know, we have immediately activated all the mechanisms we have to mitigate the main conditions, but the consequences were devastating, besides the unfortunate loss of a human being, the main being and center, etc. according to this,» said Gil Jódar.
At this moment, the data is being collected that falls under the competence of the Ministry of the Interior to alleviate personal damages, housing and objects, local corporations and damages in industrial, commercial, and service units, leaving other ministries activated to study the possibility of adding further assistance. «This is good news, of course, but until it is published in the Official State Gazette, we must be cautious. We still do not know specifically what the document includes in relation to our municipality and what it does not… what is clear is that we will continue to work on this process tirelessly and dedicated to our neighbors.»
According to reports, most of the fifty civil protection emergencies included in the approved council agreement, resulted in personal damages, infrastructure, and public and private property, justifying the intervention of the General State Administration based on the principle of interterritorial solidarity and the branch with the actions that, in their exercise, have confirmed the administrations. Specifically, the list of civil protection emergencies includes what was activated on March 2 and 6 for the orange hydrological alert in Guadalentín, which has particularly affected the municipality.
«We hope that the necessary funds are considered for the recovery and repair of the damages caused throughout the municipality. And, of course, the speed in their transfer. It must be remembered that, according to initial estimates, we emphasize, the losses amount to more than 34 million euros, with fundamental conditions in housing; roads of all social premises;
In conclusion, the mayor wanted to thank the Directorate General of Roads «for the diligence with which they acted during the heavy rains and later, regarding detachments, road breakages, etc. throughout the municipality».
