El alcalde de Lorca compara la reducción de la transferencia con la crisis industrial de los 80 y 90

Fulgencio Gil took part in a meeting with representatives from Lorca and Scrats RiGate Community to address the serious consequences that the operational rules of Tajo-Sagura exploitation will have.

Lorca will be the most affected region by the closure of the Tajo-Sagura transfer, as it will signify a true social, labor, and economic pain that has not been assessed by the sensitivity of the Spanish government.

Fulgencio Gil, Mayor: «Closing the transfer will mean abandoning thousands of hectares, loss of opportunities for our youth, and depopulating the entire region.»

May 15, 2025. The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil Jódar, participated this Thursday in a meeting with the Lorca Igrows Community and with the President of the Central Union of Irrigators of the Tajo-Segura Aqueduct (Scrats), Lucas Jiménez, to address the serious consequences that will be caused in the Guadalentín Region, and especially in Lorca, by the rules for the exploitation of the Tajo-Sagura transfer that the Spanish Government intends to impose.

During the meeting, Fulgencio Gil expressed his firm and unwavering support to the primary sector, farmers, breeders, and irrigators, and delivered a clear and powerful message: «Lorca will not stand by idly in the face of a decision that represents a direct blow to the economy, employment, and future of the entire region. Industrial in the 80s and 90s.»

The mayor emphasized that water is part of the history and identity of the municipality, stating that «the history of Lorca and its region is marked by the struggle for water. We carry it in our DNA. We are agriculture and animals, and it’s not just an economic sector: it’s the means of our society, it’s our present and future.»

He added that «the agriculture and animals in Lorca are among the most technical in the world. We are an international example of water use. Here, every drop is treated as if, due to the effort and consciousness of our farmers and breeders.»

In this regard, Gil Jódar was also very critical of the attitude of the Spanish government, stating that «sacrificing Spain’s food autonomy and a large part of Europe simply because they were driven by ridiculous ideological fanaticism.»

The mayor warned that the Lorca region will be one of the most affected if the closure of the transfer goes through: «If we do not plant in all areas, the consequences will be suffered for decades. This is not a matter of political colors, but a matter of survival.»

Furthermore, Fulgencio Gil mentioned that «now they tell us they won’t even wait until 2027, they will take a sentence from the Supreme Court to close it. If it were up to them, they would do it tomorrow. This compels us to mobilize more than ever.»

Finally, he stressed that «as Mayor of Lorca, my message is clear: you can count on your city council and on this mayor. It’s not a step back. Now, more than ever, we are forced to take a step forward, because in the future we will be judged by what we are able to mobilize before this attack» and not rest.
